Brief

The Volvo x Hyper Island Sprint was a three day hackathon with 22 teams of Hyper Island students from different programmes involved. We had to develop innovative solutions for electrifying construction sites and enabling Volvo's net-zero goal.

Challenge

From our conversations with the Volvo team and our own research revealed that quarry companies are hesitant to adopt electric vehicles for their worksites due to a lack of knowledge of both the benefits of electric vehicles and the best approach to transitioning their fleets.

Solution

The idea for the Volvo x Hyper Island Sprint is a user-centric, innovative approach to electrifying construction sites, aiming to support Volvo's net-zero goal. It combines a realistic simulation of an active construction site with educational workshops and Q&A sessions to bridge the knowledge gap about electric vehicles. The prototype not only extracts and utilises data from both personnel and machinery for optimal operation but also emphasises a human-to-human perspective, ensuring a smooth transition to electric vehicles. This approach not only positions Volvo as an industry pioneer but also significantly enhances its reputation as a leader in sustainable construction practices.
